Our History
In the Beginning
On Sunday, May 22, 1921, a group of twelve Christians gathered in a small schoolhouse in Claymont, Delaware. United by their faith and a shared vision, they made the decision to form a Baptist church in their community. By unanimous vote, this group chose to become known as the Union Baptist Church of Claymont, Delaware.
This foundational moment marked the beginning of a journey rooted in dedication, fellowship, and a commitment to serving God and one another.

During Reverend Brooks’s tenure, the church received a significant blessing when the Worth Steel Company of Claymont donated a place of worship to the congregation in 1949.
A New Era and Relocation
In September 1963, the original church building in Claymont was sold, prompting the congregation to relocate. Members gathered for worship at the YMCA in Wilmington for three years, during which time they initiated a building fund to secure a permanent home for the church.
Their efforts bore fruit when they purchased a lot at 26th and Pine Street, and the new church building was occupied in March 1967.
As the Union Baptist Church family continued to grow, plans were made in 1974 for a new sanctuary to better serve the needs of the congregation. The dedication and opening services for the new sanctuary were celebrated over two weeks, from October 23rd through November 6, 1977 — marking another important chapter in the church’s history.
Enter to Worship, Depart to Serve
Though the original founders of 1921 and the challenges of their time have passed, the spirit of dedication, commitment, and love remains at the heart of Union Baptist Church. Today, the congregation holds fast to its founding commissions: “Enter to worship, Depart to serve.”
